Four Types Of Headaches And The Best Four Ways To Get Rid Of Them!

An estimated 90% of the human population will experience a headache in their lives, but not everyone is affected in the same way. While some people have mildly irritating headaches that are few and far between, others experience debilitating pain on sometimes a daily basis, requiring much more intensive management.

There are four types of headaches: tension, migraine, sinus, and cluster, and they all require unique ways of treating them.

1.Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are far and away the most common, as they have been experienced by about 78% of the population. It’s caused by tightness in the muscles of the scalp and the back of the neck

Symptoms of a tension headache are clear. During a tension headache, you may experience:

  • Squeezing pain on both sides of the head, although one-sided pain is possible
  • Pain located over the forehead, temples, or back of the neck
  • Radiation of pain into the neck and shoulders
  • Moderate pain
  • Pain that gradually appears
  • Stress or stressful situations prior to the headache

Tension headaches do not usually have symptoms like light or sound sensitivity or nausea and vomiting. While the pain appears gradually, there is not usually an aura or any warning signs that a tension headache is about to appear.

The most commonly used medications for this type of headache are over the counter medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

2.Migraine Headaches

This is chronic headache which can occur in the different part of the head and are usually much more severe than tension headache.

A typical migraine will have one or more of this following symptoms:

  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Pain located on one or both sides of the head
  • Pulsating or throbbing pain
  • Pain made worse with activity
  • Pain that may impair your ability to function “normally”
  • Nausea, with or without vomiting
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sound sensitivity
  • Sparkling flashes of light in your vision
  • Zigzag types of lines in your vision
  • Slowly expanding blind spots
  • Tingling, “pins and needles” sensation in one arm or leg
  • Weakness
  • Language or speech problems

To treat a migraine, it’s best to rest in a cool, dark room, and use a cold washcloth or compress to reduce symptoms. While over the counter medications can be used, those who suffer from frequent, severe migraines are better suited with prescription medications. Gentle head massages can also help get rid of the pain.

3.Sinus Headaches

Sinus headaches can be easily identified by the pain they cause in the sinus cavities in the forehead and underneath the eyes.

Almost half of people with sinus headache have runny or stuffy nose or teary eyes with their headaches.

  • Pain around the nose and eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Fever
  • Pain can be mild to severe

Traditional over the counter medications can help relieve a sinus headache, as can holding a warm washcloth over the affected area to help break up the mucus.

4.Cluster Headaches

This chronic headache is very rare and affects only 0,5 % of people.

Symptoms of cluster headaches are fairly unique, however so it is good to understand the common symptoms.

  • Repetitive headaches occurring on and off for weeks at a time
  • Quickly-appearing pain on one side of the head, usually behind the eye
  • Stuffy nose and watery eye
  • Very severe pain

Cluster headaches need to be treated with prescription medication and sometimes even using an oxygen mask to alleviate some of the pain. In many cases, those who suffer from cluster headaches take medication to try to prevent their occurrence.
