Xantelasma is a flat benign formation with yellowish color in the form of a slightly elevated plaque. It is located more often on the upper eyelid at the inner corner of the eye. Xantelasma may have single, multiple, or one of the manifestations of xanthomatosis of the skin, in which xantelasm-like plaques are located in other parts of the body.

Diagnosis is based on the appearance. When xantelasma is detected, the lipid spectrum of the blood is examined. If it is detected, the therapy is aimed at correcting the lipid and blood cholesterol content. To eliminate the cosmetic defect, xantelasm is removed.

It mainly affects older people and most often women. A number of authors believe that xantelisma can be considered as a marker of severe atherosclerosis and an increased risk of developing myocardial infarction.

The exact causes of xanthelasma are not known. Xanthomatosis of the skin develops as a result of local deposits of fats in the papillary layer of the dermis. Although xantelases do not differ in their structure from xanthomas, their isolated appearance often fails to detect significant disorders of the metabolism of fat.

Xanthelases and xanthomas are often observed in patients with obesity, diabetes mellitus, myxedema, lipoid nephrosis, pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis, high cholesterol in the blood.

Xanthomatosis can be hereditary in nature. In such cases, a genetically determined disorder of fat metabolism develops. The disease manifests itself during the first year of life.

Xantelasm is a slightly protruding yellow plaque located on the upper eyelid. It is painless when palpating and has a soft consistency. As a rule, xantelasma appear on both eyelids. They can be single and multiple. In the latter case, xantelasms can merge.

Sometimes xantelasms merge into a solid yellow strip with an uneven contour, passing through the entire upper eyelid. Its development takes place gradually and slowly, without any subjective sensations in the patient.

Xantelasmas can reach a size from a small pea to a large string bean. It does not pose a threat to the human body. However, large and multiple xantelasms, in spite of being harmlessness from a medical point of view, represent a significant cosmetic problem.

That’s one of many reasons why you need to take measures to lower your levels of cholesterol. In the meanwhile, these natural remedies will help you minimize the appearance and even eliminate the bumps.

1. Garlic

The enzymes that can be found in garlic will help you flatten the small deposits. Garlic will also lower your levels of cholesterol. Garlic extract is an efficient and completely safe alternative to pharmaceutical cholesterol-lowering and blood pressure medications.

• Slice one or two cloves of garlic to prepare a paste. Apply it on the affected region and cover it using a gauze to prevent the garlic from getting in your eye. Let it stay for 10 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water.

You can also consume a couple of raw cloves of garlic before breakfast every day. If you opt for garlic supplement, you should first consult your doctor. Don’t use garlic on your skin for longer periods of time because it can burn your skin. If you have sensitive skin, don’t use it.

2. Castor oil

Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid that has the ability to lower the levels of cholesterol. To use it as a natural remedy for eye bumps, soak a cotton pad in the oil. Apply on the affected area and massage it. Secure the cotton pad with a bandage. Remove it when you wake up. For best results, opt for organic, cold-pressed castor oil.

3. Apple cider vinegar

If the main reason why you xantelasma around the eyes is high cholesterol level, then apple cider vinegar is the best remedy. It can reduce the bad cholesterol, while at the same time removing toxins from your body. It contains acetic acid that can lower and possibly eliminate these fat bumps as a result of its powerful corrosive nature.

To use it, just soak a cotton pad in the vinegar and put it on the affected area. Secure it with bandage for two hours and rinse it with lukewarm water. Do this two times a day.

4. Fenugreek seeds

These seeds are rich in fiber so they can lower the cholesterol. To decrease the cholesterol deposits around your eyes, soak 2 spoons of seeds in water and let them stay overnight. Consume the mixture in the morning, before having breakfast.

This way you will lower the levels of bad cholesterol. Also, you can directly apply the water in which you soaked the seeds on the fatty bumps. Gently massaging the area with the water will enable the ingredients to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, so that the deposited fat can be dissolved.

5. Onion

Bake a medium-sized onion in the oven until soft, then mash it to form a thick paste. Grate a small piece (about 0.5 cm) of soap and mix it with the mashed onion.

Apply the mixture on a gauze and put it on the affected area, strictly avoiding contact with the mucous membrane. Let it stay for 5-10 minutes 1-2 times a day. After removing the compress, wash the affected area.

6. Banana peel

Banana peels can dissolve the fat deposits due to the powerful enzymes they contain. Since they have powerful antioxidant properties, banana peels are also a healthy natural solution for all skin treatments in general.

Put a piece of ripe banana peel over the affected area, secure it using tape, let it stay overnight and remove it the next morning and wash the area. Repeat this procedure until you notice an improvement.

7. Coriander

Coriander is very rich in various antioxidant enzymes that can dissolve the bad cholesterol found in the blood. For treating Xanthelasma, just boil one spoon of coriander seeds in a cup of water. Steep this mixture for about 15 minutes.

Then strain it and drink the resulting (and sufficiently cooled down) water. Drink one cup of this juice three times a day, untill your bad LDL cholesterol levels sufficiently decrease, and the fat deposit around eyes are eliminated.

8. Orange juice

Vitamin C, flavonoids and folate found in orange juice are efficient at increasing the high-density lipoprotein (known as the good cholesterol) level and decreasing the bad LDL cholesterol. Orange juice can improve the blood lipid profiles in those who suffer from hypercholesterolemia.

Also long-term consumption of fresh orange juice is linked with decreased LDL cholesterol as well as apolipoprotein B in moderately hypercholesterolemic and normal subjects as a result of the increased vitamin C and folate in their diets.

Consume 2 to 3 glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice every day to maintain normal cholesterol levels. You can also eat a couple of oranges every day as an alternative to orange juice.

9. Almonds

To prevent increasing of the size of these cholesterol spots around the eyes, it’s really important to pay close attention on what you consume. Consuming high-fat foods rich in cholesterol will only aggravate this unpleasant condition. To prevent this follow these tips:

• Reduce the quantity of deep fried or fatty foods from your diet.
• Limit the consumption of saturated fats.
• Incorporate organic coconut oil in your diet. For example, add a tablespoon of coconut oil in your smoothies or coffee.
• Avoid excess consumption of processed sugars and carbohydrates.
• Limit the consumption of food that contributes to increased bad cholesterol, including red meat, high-fat dairy products, processed foods and egg yolks.
• Consume more whole grains as well as fresh vegetables and fruits.
• Incorporate foods rich in fiber, like beans, in your daily diet.
• Regularly enjoy a bowl of oatmeal to lower your levels of cholesterol.

Additional Tips

• Always do anything to maintain a normal weight.
• Avoid consuming too much alcohol and quit smoking.
• Exercise at least half an hour, five days a week, to boost your blood flow which will help you break down the accumulated fats.
• Regular check your cholesterol and lipid levels.
• Take fish oil supplements to keep your cholesterol level in check.
