This home test was invented by Dr. Broda Barnes 50 years ago when he found that the body temperature can be a good indicatior for the function of your thyroid gland, or more precisely, the body temperature immediately after waking up.
He wrote a book about thyroid activity with a description of the various problems and illnesses that may occur due to reduced activity of this important organ, and he also developed a simple home test that can be applied to check the function of your thyroid.
Here’s how to do it…
Barnes test
The procedure is simple. Before going to sleep take a thermometer and shake it until the temperature is lower than 35C. The following morning put the thermometer under your armpit immediately after waking up. Be sure there are no clothes between the thermometer and your hand. Let the thermometer stay there for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, read the results and immediately write it down. The result is known as “early morning basal temperature”. Normal temperature is between 36.5 and 36.8.The temperature may vary due to infectious disease in women who have periods. It is therefore recommended to make this test if you are healthy and you do not have your period.
The test results:
1.If the body temperature is 36.5 and 36.8 than your thyroid gland is working properly.
2.If the temperature is below 36.5, then it is reduced work of the thyroid (hypothyroidism). The symptoms of reduced work of the thyroid are depression, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, chronic headaches, lack of memory and concentration, loss of hair, etc.
3.If your body temperature is higher than 36.8, it can be an indication for hyperthyroidism or infection in the body. For more accurate results, do the test 3 days in a row. If your body temperature is constantly above or below normal, you should consult your doctor for further diagnosis.
What is important for good function of the thyroid land?
For normal thyroid function it is necessary to have healthy liver, stress-free life, vitamin A, cortisol, selenium, vitamin B and magnesium.
